A NEW SAFER SURFACE FOR PARTS OF THE NEWELL HIGHWAY IN SOUTHERN RIVERINA

Work is starting this week on a $3.4 million project to improve the surface of the Newell Highway through the southern Riverina around Jerilderie.

Member for Albury Justin Clancy said the NSW Government funded project involves rebuilding the road surface at two locations on this critical freight route.

“As well as resulting in a smoother and safer road, this will have the added benefit of reducing future maintenance costs at these locations,” Mr Clancy said.

“As the backbone of New South Wales’ freight network, ensuring the Newell is well maintained supports the efficient movement of freight on this important corridor.

“From Friday 12 February, upgrade work will take place on a 380 metre section of highway from Coonong Street to Coreen Street.

“Once this section has been upgraded, work will move north to a 470 metre section of the Newell Highway between Brown and O’Neill streets.”

Work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and between 8.30am and 1pm on Saturdays and is expected to be completed by late March, weather permitting.

Single lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists and road users are advised to plan their journey and allow an extra five minutes travel time.

Transport for NSW thanks the community for its patience while this important road safety improvement work is completed.
