Call for Budget Certainty for AgSkilled

 Member for Albury, Justin Clancy, speaking in the NSW Parliament, has called for the Minns NSW government to fund AgSkilled in this year’s Budget, providing support to train the next generation of agricultural workers.

Initiated with a $14.7 million investment in 2017 and further funding of $15 million in 2020 by the NSW National-Liberal government, AgSkilled is a workforce training program for the agriculture and livestock sectors, helping ensure that workers are prepared for industry changes driven by innovation, research and technology.

‘Whilst I acknowledge the funding of $5 million in last year’s budget for AgSkilled 3.0 it is deeply concerning that the program is only funded until 30 June 2025, with as-yet no funding committed by the Minns Government,’ said Mr Clancy.

‘As raised with me in a meeting with President of NSW Farmers Xavier Martin, there is a need to provide certainty with at a minimum three-year funding to maintain and expand what is a proven model in AgSkilled.’

‘Industry led training programs and initiatives work. They know what is needed to train the next generation of agricultural workers. The industry knows the unique skills, and the challenges that may be faced, now and in the future.’

Over 78,000 people work in the agriculture sector with projections showing an additional 2000 people per year will be required to meet future workforce demands. The agriculture sector contributes $19.4 billion to the NSW economy, per a year.

‘I urge the Minns government to continue funding support for AgSkilled. We need to see certainty for industry led programs that demonstrate impact,’ Mr Clancy said.
