ALBURY AIMING TO HOST BIG BASH IN 2021/22

Albury has secured a $100,000 grant from the NSW Government to assist its efforts to host a Big Bash match at the redeveloped Lavington Sports Ground in 2021/22.

Member for Albury Justin Clancy said securing the game would be a great coup for the region.

“It would be fantastic to bring the BBL to Albury to attract visitors, encourage spending in border communities and drive a stronger regional economy,” Mr Clancy said.

“The highlight would be the look on Albury kids’ faces as they watch their Big Bash heroes and dream of following in their footsteps. We are ready to host a fantastic spectacle.”

Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the NSW Government is committed to supporting cricket in regional NSW and bringing a fixture to Albury will be a chance for locals to see their heroes live in action.

“As Aussies we love our cricket and this is particularly true in Albury where a large social network often revolves around the local cricket club,” Mr Barilaro said.

“T20 cricket has given new life to the game, keeping kids interested and attracting new fans. Now locals will get a chance to once again see a live BBL fixture in their hometown thanks to this funding from the NSW Government.”

Acting Minister for Sport Geoff Lee said the NSW Government was enthusiastic to support Albury’s efforts to host the game.

“Albury has previously successfully hosted Border Bash games in 2016 and 2017 involving the Melbourne Stars,” Mr Lee said.

“The NSW Government was proud to invest in the completed upgrades to Lavington Sports Ground recently, making it a world-class regional sports hub. Now it’s ready to host the best in the BBL.”

Sydney Thunder player Chris Green welcomed the Albury opportunity next season.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time in Albury, having previously been there for the Border Bash and the Country Blitz,” Mr Green said.

“Seeing the hard yards that have gone into upgrading Lavington Oval, hosting a BBL match there will be an exciting event and help grow the Thunder Nation and cricket participation in the region.”

Other Albury projects to receive grants in Round 3 of the NSW ICC T20 World Cup Cricket Legacy Fund include $30,000 to Holbrook Cricket Club towards the redevelopment of Holbrook Sports Complex and $18,000 to Cricket Albury Wodonga for the New For Old in Southern Riverina 2020 program.

The funding is from Round 3 of the NSW ICC T20 World Cup Cricket Legacy Fund as part of the $2 million awarded to clubs and councils across NSW. The Fund aims to support the growth of cricket participation and ensure a lasting legacy from NSW’s matches during the women’s and men’s T20 World Cups.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be held in 2022, with seven matches proposed to be held in Sydney. Fixtures and ticketing details will be available in 2021.
