July 23, 2026Media Release: Planning Complete – Now Fund Thurgoona Drive Interchange
Member for Albury Justin Clancy has welcomed today's confirmation of a preferred concept design for the Thurgoona Drive interchange, saying the project has now reached the point where the Government must commit to construction funding.
Mr Clancy said the announcement represented an important milestone after years of advocacy from the local community, Transport for NSW and all levels of government.
"I welcome today's announcement and thank Transport for NSW for progressing this important work," Mr Clancy said.
"The identification of a preferred concept means the planning process has reached another significant milestone."
"Importantly, it also means the focus must now shift from planning to delivery."
Mr Clancy said the Thurgoona Drive interchange had been the subject of sustained advocacy over several years.
"In 2022 I brought the then Minister for Regional Roads, the Hon. Sam Farraway, together with senior Transport for NSW officials to the site to begin the work needed to move this project forward."
"Since then, we have continued advocating for the planning, concept design and business case. That work has now largely been completed."
"The next step is clear, for government to now fund this project."
Mr Clancy said Thurgoona was one of the fastest-growing communities in regional New South Wales and infrastructure needed to keep pace with that growth.
"This interchange is a critical gateway for residents, businesses, Charles Sturt University, TAFE and the growing Thurgoona community."
"As our community grows, so too does the need for safer, more efficient road infrastructure."
Mr Clancy also acknowledged the advocacy of the Thurgoona–Wirlinga Community Action Group and the more than 700 local residents who signed a petition calling for the upgrade.
"The community has made its voice very clear."
"I want to thank everyone who has advocated for this project and helped keep it firmly on the agenda."
Mr Clancy said he would continue working constructively with the Government while holding it accountable for the next stage.
" Today's announcement is an important step. But planning alone doesn't improve safety or reduce congestion."
"I'll continue working with the Minister and advocating strongly to ensure the Government now commits the funding needed to deliver this critical project."
