WIDER, SMOOTHER NEWELL ON THE WAY AT FINLEY

An 800 metre section of the Newell Highway through the Riverina is set for an upgrade starting this week.

Member for Albury Justin Clancy said a section of highway, including the Edwards Road intersection, would be upgraded as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to safer roads.

“The $2.35 million project is jointly funded by the NSW and Australian governments, who are investing $2.15 million and $200,000 respectively, in this important safety work,” Mr Clancy said.

“The upgrade will support up to 10 jobs and have the added benefit of reducing ongoing maintenance costs.”

Mr Clancy said by May, motorists will be enjoying an upgraded road surface on the Newell between Tongs Street and about 300 metres south of Edwards Road.

“This section of the highway will be widened with upgrades carried out to improve safety for turning and through traffic at the Edwards Road intersection, as well as driveway and drainage improvements,” Mr Clancy said.

Work is being carried out between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and between 7am and 4pm on Saturdays, weather permitting, and is expected to be completed in May.

Further work is planned to start in the middle of the year, south of Finley, with the community to be advised of this work in advance.

Changed traffic conditions will be in place including traffic control, lane closures, and reduced speed limits.

Access to property will be impacted during some stages of the project with affected owners contacted and traffic controllers in place to guide road users.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead and allow an extra 10 minutes for their journey.
