$1.3M FOR MURRAY CONSERVATORIUM OF MUSIC UPGRADE

Member for Albury Justin Clancy today announced the NSW Government would provide $1.3 million from its COVID-19 stimulus program to upgrade the Murray Conservatorium of Music building in Albury.

Mr Clancy said the funding would provide a boost for one of the city’s most iconic buildings by supporting a number of well needed repairs and improvements.

“This funding is fantastic news for our city as the Conservatorium of Music building is a significant State Heritage asset that is a prominent feature for Albury’s main street,” Mr Clancy said.

“$390,000 of the $1.3 million funding will be provided in 2020/21 followed by the remaining $910,000 in 2021/22 to support upgrade work on the building.

“Assessments have identified a need for repairs to the building’s roof and gutters to keep it weather-proof and protect its structure, ceiling and paint coverings from rainwater and rising and falling damp.

“Work is also needed to upgrade the fire escape and the building would benefit from installation of a disability ramp to assist any students with mobility needs.

“Further assessments are occurring on needed work for the Dean Street building which is protected by a Permanent Conservation Order under the Heritage Act.

“The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment - Crown Lands has engaged Public Works Advisory to undertake a heritage condition assessment which will soon be completed and will identify priority repairs and future maintenance needs.”

Minister for Water, Property and Housing Melinda Pavey said the COVID-19 stimulus program was upgrading important community infrastructure while supporting jobs and local economies.

“The Murray Conservatorium of Music, which occupies the Crown land building, is a not-for-profit organisation that provides services to about 2,500 regional students each week so a good home is imperative,” Minister Pavey said.

Murray Conservatorium CEO Jenny O’Hara said “Thank you to The Hon. Minister Melinda Pavey and Justin Clancy, Member for Albury, for supporting Murray Conservatorium to enrich lives through quality music education for our border community.”

“This conservatorium exists for the whole community, it’s where music lives.

“The Murray Conservatorium of Music has served the region faithfully with quality music education for nearly four decades making an important contribution to the cultural fabric of the community and region.”
